Our story
Help Us Help Others.
A commitment to young people, educational opportunity, and community connection since 2006.
Rooted in greater Newark
The William J. Dowdy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit established in 2006. Its mission is to give children in the greater Newark, New Jersey area more opportunities to experience the arts, culture, science, and athletics, and to help young people build a strong foundation through scholarships.
Higher education is central to that work. The foundation offers the Maldine C. Dowdy Scholarship, recognizes recipients at a scholarship breakfast, and brings supporters together through community events.
Community is part of the mission
The foundation’s documented work also includes literacy projects, youth activities, support for families and shelters, food bank service, and crisis intervention and disaster relief programming.
Its longstanding message is simple: Help Us Help Others.
